The 1st Wales & West Friendly Competition took place on Sunday 12th June at Weston-s-Mare, and has been overwhelmingly praised by competitors and spectators! We had 74 competitors compete across 26 categories, designed to test kata and kumite skills across a wide spectrum of ages and abilities. From individual white belt 6-8 year old kata, through to Team Brown/Black belt 21 years+ Shobu Ippon Kumite. Over 100 spectators turned up to watch the tournament for free. Emily Smith said: “Would like to say what a great competition today was both my children competed and had a great friendly time 🙂 well done to all and Shinto group on their first of many competitions x thanks”. Lucinda Bishop wrote: “Hi, I just wanted to say thank you for your time and organisation for the competition today. We came from Shinto in Tewksbury. My son Max is 7 and has only been learning karate for about 3 months, he came away with 2 silver and 1 bronze medal. Your patience, approach and encouragement with the younger ones was outstanding. It was his first competition and you gave them confidence and reassurance to take part in competitions in the future. They are all lucky that you are all so willing to give your time and experience for them to learn, thank you again.” The event couldn’t have run without a team of 10 referees and 4 table officials (plus our two ‘runners’ Lola and Antonia, and registrar Elin Fry). Over 160 medals were presented over what turned out to be a fantastic day! See you next year?
